  • Saxophonist Simon Bates demonstrates a simple exercise you can do at home to improve your breath control and capacity.

    • Make sure you are relaxed and in a comfortable posture, with your shoulders relaxed.
    • Breathe in and out normally, then continue breathing out beyond where you would usually stop. Fill your lungs to maximum capacity until you can’t speak anymore.
    • After completely exhaling, breathe in as much air as you can, imagining you’re yawning to fully expand your lungs.
    • Play a simple scale on your instrument after filling your lungs to capacity to see how many times you can play it without needing to take a breath.

Add this routine into your practice sessions: before every scale, at the beginning of every piece, during rests, etc. With consistent practice , you should gradually develop the habit of using your diaphragm and breathing correctly without conscious effort.
